Top 10 Things to Look for in a Guru
Weapons of Mass Instruction…
-
A sense of personal power or strength; this person is not necessarily charismatic, but gives you a sense s/he is spiritually strong, balanced, somehow unshakeable (think Mother Teresa)
-
Sense of humor and amusement in teaching and conduct with others; without the need to control people, places and things, or the fear of being controlled, such a person would be relaxed, optimistic, encouraging, even happy.
-
Commitment to spiritual growth and progress in oneself and others; a track record of spiritual commitment and achievement(!?).
-
Integrity in personal and family life; anyone can talk about spirituality, how about someone who lives it.
-
Inspires a feeling of safety and support; shuns manipulative power plays and games when relating to others in the group; places no pressure on you to conform; is surrounded by friendly people in supportive environment.
-
Confident in teaching; note how s/he reacts to opposition or contradiction from followers or others; an enlightened person will react with understanding and compassion, rather that pull spiritual rank.
-
Non-competitive in all things; there is no point in encouraging competition among followers because enlightenment is not a sport. In fact, the harder you pursue it the farther away it gets.
-
Clearly explains what is taught and why; no mumbo-jumbo or elaborate "mystical" ceremonies that are off limits, to be taken on faith alone; no sense of hiding behind ceremony or tradition.
-
Has integrity in all financial matters; no sense of exploitation of teachings for financial gain.
-
Emphasizes that your personal experience is the ultimate authority in all things; you should feel that s/he encourages a spirit of free and unlimited inquiry, that nothing is beyond questioning, that you are free to participate or walk away, it doesn't matter.
My God
My God is: Buddha, Jesus, Allah, Hindu Gods and Goddesses,
The Force behind Greatness, the Light within, and the Higher Power above
My God is present and teaches in Synagogues, Temples,
Churches, Mosques, in Stillness, and in this Moment.
My God is loving, caring, understanding, and forgiving.
My God loves you and me.This is my God, and I surrender.
