How does MyShrink support itself?
Most of MyShrink is supported through the volunteer efforts of Dr. LaCombe, her colleagues and the generosity of our technical team through special discounts on services (see our technical team below).
MyShrink is also partially funded through the income from sponsors or what is known in Internet business world as affiliates (e.g. Amazon, Spiritual Cinema, Zip.ca, LivePerson and Native Remedies.
A great deal of effort was put into our choice of sponsors. Those sponsors chosen were the ones we felt were especially relevant to MyShrink visitors...well...actually, Zip.ca and Netflix are for fun...and we all need more of that.
Here's how our relationship with affiliates work:
When the user clicks through an ad a cookie is placed on their IP address that notifies the company the user is from MyShrink. If the user subsequently makes a purchase the company rewards MyShrink. So for example, when users click through to Amazon and make a purchase, MyShrink gets a 4% commission on the sale of the product. (The Amazon ads are posted as a convenience to our users. We derive very little income from these ads.)
This process does not mean the customer pays extra. The customer pays the same price whether a commission is dispensed or not.
The same procedure is followed by other affiliates. When a user makes a purchase MyShrink profits from it.
Google Ads:
MyShrink makes money when users click on the Google ads. (Please do not click on a Google Ad unless you are sincerely interested in the company's product or service.)
In future, we will also seek funds from companies who wish to sponsor a section of MyShrink. In this case, MyShrink will derive an income whether or not a user clicks through to the ad. For more information about our advertising policy see our Terms of Service.
How to Advertise on MyShrink
Much of the advertising on MyShrink is handled by Google Adwords. Under the Adwords program businesses have incredible flexibility in targeting their ads to their visitors. Ad campaigns can be organized for geographic areas and/or specific web sites, including most importantly, search terms (or what is known in the biz as "keywords").
What this means is that if you are advertising your counseling service, your ads will show up in the geographic you work in and on sites (i.e. like MyShrink) that interest your potential clients.
How does it work?
Well, the program recognizes the keywords you used when you placed your ad. These same keywords are matched with specific web sites that also use these keywords.
Since MyShrink is a site about counseling, therapy, psychotherapy, anxiety and depression to name a few topics, your target population will naturally be drawn to your ads.
Health Professionals Support MyShrink
My name is Suzanne LaCombe Ed.D. I am a Registered Psychologist in private practice in Vancouver, BC. (For my bio and relevant experience see my private practice site at http://www.myshrink.ca).
I am currently the publisher/editor of MyShrink and responsible for writing most of the content on the site. I also sign my name as "Shrinklady".
Several other professionals, psychotherapists and health care practitioners have also contributed through their time and feedback.
*Terry McGraw, B.A. LLB. Terry has been with MyShrink from the beginning and he's been a champion of the MyShrink cause ever since. Terry has devoted countless hours editing, strategic planning and doing almost all of the technnical backend. I am especially grateful to his insight and business acumen that I believe has saved me from taking the wrong direction on more than one occasion! Heartfelt Thanks, Terry!
*Coquitlam Psychologist Carole Gaato Ph.D., R. Psych. who put in tireless hours editing and providing valuable input over many late night dinners. Warmest Thanks, Carole!
Others who have contributed their time and support:
*Tracy Halpen, Ed.D., R. Psych.
*Vancouver Counselling with Janice Stuart Ph.D., R. Psych.
*Vancouver Massage Therapy w/ Erika Moore, RMT
*Advisory Board members.
A Special Thanks
I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to the folks at Digital Heights. Digital Heights created this dynamite web site. They took on this project when I knew very little about the Internet. They were wonderfully patient as I learned to maneuver the Net and as the project evolved through several variations. Without their technical know-how and foresight, MyShrink would not be what it is today. I 'm fortunate that Digital Heights is my webmaster!
Not to mention...their warmth and generosity of spirit has been an inspiration!
Thank-you Charlotte!
Charlotte Lambert has drawn most of the illustrated artwork on the site. As you can see, Charlotte is enormously talented. She made my job so much easier because her work brings a level of warmth and sophistication I would not have had without her.
Although I have never met Charlotte, nor even chatted with her on the telephone - as neither one of us speaks the other's language - I always felt her sincere commitment to the project. I have valued her honest input and am grateful that she continued to stay with us even when she and her family moved to the other side of the Atlantic.
P.S. Charlotte would make a fantastic illustrator for a children's book. I hope to nab her in the future for just such a project.
Thanks to our artistic/tech team member, David Montie.
What are the odds that I could find someone with a psychology/neuroscience background who is also an artist and a whiz at the computer?
Finding David was a pleasant surprise. He came with a unique set of skills and his presence has been instrumental in bringing the site to launch.
David has several interactive projects (such as Moments) on the go and we plan to incorporate some of them into the site. I am looking forward to the fun we'll have developing this kind of New Media content together.
Many friends and colleagues have generously given their time and feedback which we've incorporated into the site. Thanks to Rob, Aaron, Tim, Johnny, Kathleen, Sam, Sue, Susan, Bea, and Amy.
And thanks to all the folks at the MyShrink Launch Party who came to share in our excitement and to offer their support. Bravo!
