Significant Other
Draft Version: September 8, 2007.
Typically, 'significant other' is a phrase used by psychotherapists as way of describing the important people in one's life. 'Significant others' can include family members, close friends or your partner.
Research suggests that having a significant person in our life is associated with increased longevity, higher resistance to illness and a lower risk for heart disease.
What many of these studies fail to look at however is that the capacity to connect with another person may require some aspect of self that predisposes us to better health and increased longevity.
In other words, it isn't just the fact of having another person in our life that matters. There may be factors that predispose us to connect with others that indeed lends itself to having people in our lives.
And, it's this quality that may account for the better health and not the fact of merely having someone in our lives.
Something to think about...
