Helen Keller
Although Helen Keller (1880-1968) was left blind and deaf by an early childhood illness, this American author, activist and lecturer's heroic life was immortalized in the movie "The Miracle Worker". She campaigned for women's suffrage, workers' rights, and socialism, as well as many other progressive causes.
She is pictured here receiving an Academy Award for the documentary about her life, "The Unconquered" in 1955.
