Take a "Right-Brain" Break
By: Dr. Suzanne LaCombe, October 13, 2007.
Reading text, especially text that's dense as it is on MyShrink, can really work the brain (even if the content doesn't trigger your emotions, but that's another story...).
Reading text is also a left brain "thinking" task. Switching to the right brain mode by looking at images is like hitting the "refresh" button for your brain.
It gives your brain a break!
MyShrink Reading Tip
Whenever you load a new page click the image box, then sit back and enjoy the restful image we've selected. I'm convinced this will improve your concentration and your overall experience as you surf the site.
Did you know that graphic artists do the same thing, but for the opposite reason? Whenever they get "brain fog" from working with images they'll refresh themselves by reading for a while.
This gives the brain a break, and if done frequently it keeps the mind focused and creatively fresh.
How does it work?
It works by interrupting the internal patterned responses that are triggered as we read text. You see, the nervous system responds instantly to what we're reading; it's most noticeable in our body's sensations. Muscles contract or relax, heart rate changes, breath speeds up or slows down, etc.
These patterned responses are somewhat unique, depending on what we're reading and how long we've been at it.
Looking at images, especially colorful and engaging ones, takes us out of procedure. It interrupts the patterned response and moves us into a resource. (You may recall that a resource is anything that resonates positively inside).
In other words, an inner resource makes us feel good.
This illustrates one of the fundamental teachings of MyShrink: "resourcing" is how the nervous system can regain its balance. This is how nurturing activities such as yoga, meditation, or walking in the woods work. They provide a way for the nervous system to rebalance itself. You end up feeling calm and centered as a result.
"Out of procedure and into resource!"
This is the basis for the effectiveness of somatic therapies...and most therapies for that matter.
So I encourage you to click the image box whenever you move to a new page (depending on how activated you get, of course!)
Take a break and change the patterned way you respond.
Click the Image Box at least once during your visits to MyShrink.
Good luck on your journey!
