How does therapy work?

Make psychotherapy work for you.
Be an active participant.

Suzanne LaCombe Ed.D., R.Psych.

It's a novel idea, and why not? Why not take charge of your own therapy?

Because they're seen as members of the "medical establishment" we tend to revere therapists in our culture. In some ways, they've taken the place of spiritual leaders. This can serve us well at times but hamper our development at others.

This idealized perception of therapists can work in our favour. Their professional status helps to contain our emotions when we're feeling distressed.

However, if you or your therapist is not "showing up", that is, not showing up to the process of therapy, deep therapeutic work won't go anywhere near what's possible.

You see, there is much more to therapy - it can expand your life in ways you never imagined - yet not all therapists get that. And not all clients use therapy in the way I'm describing.

Here's your challenge.

I urge you to watch closely how therapy works, how you feel about your interactions with your therapist. The stories and events that you share - while essential - are only part of the work.

You need to bring your awareness to every session. Be an active participant in the process of psychotherapy.
